Fulfillment Program

Streamlined the pick, pack, and ship process with integrated order data and fulfillment tracking

Domain: Order Fulfillment Operations

Technology: Custom Application, Inventory / Kit Management

OVERVIEW

As the volume of fulfillment orders grew, managing the pick-and-pack process using only Control and manual checklists became increasingly difficult. Kitted orders with multiple components, largely varying in quantity or type, were especially prone to errors, and there was no clear operational visibility into fulfillment queue status.

THE CHALLENGE

A fulfillment program needed to pull order data from an Excel spreadsheet, present it to fulfillment staff in a task-oriented interface optimized for their workflow, guide them through multi-component kits, and record completion statuses, not to mention auto-batching matching kits into larger, easier-to-fulfill groups.

THE SOLUTION

The fulfillment program was built as a purpose-built web application for the fulfillment station. On launch, it displayed orders sorted by priority and due date. For each order, the program displayed a detailed pick list with all required components, quantities, and bin locations. For kitted orders, components were displayed as a checklist that fulfillment staff stepped through sequentially, confirming each item before moving to the next. Scanning support allowed barcode verification of picked items against the expected SKUs.

REFLECTION

Purpose-built operational tools succeed when they reduce cognitive load for the people doing the physical work. Every design decision in this project was evaluated against one question: does this make it easier or harder for someone standing at a packing station to do their job quickly and correctly?
